Stay in your lane

I love the intelligence features in our 2019 Subaru.  By sensing other vehicles and road markings while actively managing my vehicle’s position, these features keep me safely in my (traffic) lane.  If I move out of the lane, the system needs to reset based on my new situation.

This ‘stay in your lane’ approach is how you should think about AI capabilities today. If you need to address a specific need, then machine learning may be a good solution to eliminate mundane tasks and/or enable better decisions. But don’t ask or expect the solution to do more than what it was intended.

A good term for an AI solution that excels at performing a single task is ‘narrow AI’. Contrast this term with ‘general AI’ where machines perform a broad range of tasks on par with humans. The latter doesn’t exist today outside of sci-fi stories. Today’s technology requires you to focus on how narrow AI can help your business become more effective, just like the intelligence features in today’s vehicles make you a better driver.
